As a chef, I’ve cooked hundreds of seafood dishes, but nothing brings back childhood memories like a simple fish fry. Growing up near the coast, we’d buy the catch of the day, marinate it with spices, and fry it till golden. That first bite – crunchy outside, soft inside – is still my favorite seafood memory.
Ingredients
- Buy Fresh Fish in Ahmedabad
- 500g fish fillets or steaks
- 2 tbsp red chili powder
- 1 tsp turmeric powder
- 1 tbsp ginger-garlic paste
- Juice of 1 lemon
- Salt to taste
- 3 tbsp rice flour or semolina (for crispiness)
- Oil for shallow frying
Cooking Method
Step 1: Marination
Mix chili powder, turmeric, ginger-garlic paste, lemon juice, and salt. Rub this masala generously on fish pieces. Let it rest for 30 minutes.
Step 2: Coating
Dust fish with rice flour or semolina – this makes the crust crispy.
Step 3: Frying
Heat oil in a pan. Shallow fry fish on medium heat until golden brown on both sides. Don’t overcook – fish should remain juicy inside.
Chef’s Tips
- Use fresh fish – nothing beats the taste of the day’s catch.
- Marinate in the fridge if leaving for longer.
- Always fry on medium heat – too high and it burns, too low and it soaks oil.
Serving Suggestions
Serve hot with onion rings, lemon wedges, and green chutney. For a full meal, pair with rice and dal.
